Recently, Bloomberg reported that the Trump Administration is pressuring to re-impose a 10% tariff on products containing aluminum from Canada if they refuse to impose export restrictions on aluminum. This threat comes after the U.S. claims that their aluminum market is being flooded with Canadian products. In response, a Canadian Ambassador encouraged the U.S. to be patient and see how the aluminum trade patterns shift in the coming months. They warned that if actioned now Canada has few options other than to retaliate with duties on U.S. imports.
As two countries with large bilateral trade and closely linked economies, this claim came as a surprise only days before the NAFTA (CUSMA/USMCA/T-MEC) deal came into affect this July 1, 2020. There has yet to be any new tariffs imposed between the two governments and discussions between the two are underway. Be aware that if you export products containing aluminum to the U.S. then these tariffs will affect you. Your business’ supply chains will also be affected if Canada imposes retaliatory duties on U.S. imports.
Here at JORI International Ltd., we are constantly seeking information on new tariffs and trade restrictions, and will be here to inform you if there is any movement in the U.S.’s plans to impose new aluminum tariffs. If you think you’ll be affected, contact your JORI Representative or call 403-571-3200 to discuss tariff solutions.
