What Are The General Types Of Ocean Freight?
There are many different types of vessel but the main 5 types are:
- Container Ships - carry mostly manufactured goods and products.
- Bulk Good Ships - designed to carry unpacked goods such as, fertilizers, grains, etc
- Break Bulk Ships - Carries oversized heavy items that do not fit in standard containers.
- Roll On Roll Off Ships - Carry wheeled cargo.
- VLCC - Very Large Crude Carriers - Mostly used for oil shipping but can also handle products like residual fuel oil.
Freight Forwarder Vs Ship Broker
Typically, a freight forwarder specializes in managing both Break bulk shipments and Containers ships. On the other hand, ship brokers primarily focus on chartering entire vessels or part of a vessel. This chartering often involves various types of cargo, including break bulk, roll on roll off and VLCC.
