What Are The General Types Of Ocean Freight?

There are many different types of vessel but the main 5 types are:

  • Container Ships - carry mostly manufactured goods and products.
  • Bulk Good Ships - designed to carry unpacked goods such as, fertilizers, grains, etc
  • Break Bulk Ships - Carries oversized heavy items that do not fit in standard containers.
  • Roll On Roll Off Ships - Carry wheeled cargo.
  • VLCC - Very Large Crude Carriers - Mostly used for oil shipping but can also handle products like residual fuel oil.

Freight Forwarder Vs Ship Broker

Typically, a freight forwarder specializes in managing both Break bulk shipments and Containers ships. On the other hand, ship brokers primarily focus on chartering entire vessels or part of a vessel. This chartering often involves various types of cargo, including break bulk, roll on roll off and VLCC.

Ocean Container Freight:

In today’s shipping world, 90 % of non bulk cargo worldwide is transported efficiently by shipping containers. These modern containers have evolved significantly, carrying up to 21,000TEUs and stretching as long as 400 Meters (1,300 ft).

Two types of ocean container freight are:

Less Than Container Load (LCL)

Is where you share a container with others, which works better with smaller volumes, usually ranging from 2 to 13 cubic meters (M3). While LCL can be cost effective for smaller shipments, it is worth knowing that there are often high fixed costs involved in areas such as trucking, documentation, warehousing and port fees. LCL can also lead to increased customer inspections, as your cargo is mixed with other shipments.

Full Container Load (FCL)

FLC shipping involves using an entire shipping container for your cargo, this can be of great advantage if you have a large shipment. While FLC can be more cost effective for larger shipments, it is important to maximize container space and use the most of the shipping cost.

What Is Drayage?

Drayage is the short-distance transportation of goods, by truck, between port, rail terminal, or other cargo hub. This is a crucial link in the supply chain, connecting larger transport networks such as ports and railways to final delivery points like warehouses, or distribution centers.

Rent Vs Own A Container

In the ocean freight world the vast majority of cargo is moved in carrier-owned containers (COC). This approach generally offers cheaper rates compared to using shipper-owned containers (SOC). Shipper-owned containers are mainly used for remote locations.

Door To Door Vs Port To Port Costs

Door to Door means the transportation costs from the export vendors location to the import customers location. When working to keep ocean freight costs down it is more important to focus on “Door to Door” costs, as “Port to Port” costs often represent less than half of the total shipping costs. To truly keep overall costs down you must also make sure you are not overpaying for export door to port costs, and import port to door costs.
